Pension Funds in Europe

Currently, major changes are under way in the pension systems of European countries. The ageing of the European population means that public 'pay as you go' pension schemes, where the current generation of employees pays for the pensions of the previous generation, are coming under increasing pressure. This working paper has been elaborated for the VISIONS project (Integrated Visions for a Sustainable Europe) and discusses the developments of pension funds in European pension systems, and looks at opportunities and threats in relation to them.
