CDM Methodologies for the Manufacturing of Climate friendly and Energy efficient Refrigeration Appliances

Dec. 21, 2009

Based on its experience with climate friendly refrigeration technologies, INFRAS in cooperation with SouthPoleCarbon und Winrock International (India) developed successfully two new methodologies under the UN based Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) which is one of the flexible mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol. A UN approved methodology is the prerequisite for implementation of any emission reduction project under the CDM. The Methodology AM0070 is about manufacturing of energy efficient domestic refrigeration appliances. AM0071 is about manufacturing of domestic refrigeration appliances using low GWP refrigerants such as hydrocarbons. Under a request for revision already submitted by INFRAS, the applicability range of AM0071 might also be expanded to small commercial refrigeration appliances. Both the methodologies contain methodological elements which are innovative under the CDM. This includes the access for manufacturers of mass products to CDM revenues which is a novelty and also an innovative benchmark approach under AM0070. Pilot implementation of projects has already been initiated by INFRAS in cooperation with Indian refrigerator manufacturers.
