Economic sector analysis of forestry and timber industry
Sept. 10, 2001
This study takes a critical look at the economic importance of producing and process-ing timber in Switzerland. The statistical data for the base year 1995 is presented in a consistant manner by using an input-output model. The input-output model connects the production and consumption side of the forestry and timber industry. It allows for a detailed consideration of the overall structure of this sector as well as of the interdependence of the several subsectors. However, the basic data is updated for a hypothetical situation in 2003 for the actual model simulations, assuming that the damage caused by the storm „Lothar“ has been managed appropriately. Among other things, the possible influence of setting up a large sawmill is investigated. The simulations do not make predictions but they may represent an additional basis for discussion on measures and strategies to be used in the forestry and timber industry. The input-output model shall be updated at regular intervals. It shall be used as an instrument for the analysis of different policy scenarios and for a continuous monitoring of the Swiss forestry and timber industry.
