Effects of the Aviation Tax in Germany

July 3, 2013

The aviation tax increased costs of return flights from Germany on average of approx. 2.3%. The tax was passed on to the passengers by big parts. Due to the thereby caused price increase approximately 2 million passengers adapted their travel behaviour (1.1% of the passengers from/to Germany in 2011). Approx. 0.75 million passengers of them travelled by a foreign insted of by a german airport. The other did not travel anymore or changed the transportmode. Dependent on the business model, air carriers are affected to a different degree. More strongly affected are air carriers domiciled in Germany with a high proportion of flights from/to Germany, air carriers focussed on German domestic flights. Less strongly affected are air carriers domiciled abroad or those who have several strong locations abroad.
