Emission Pathways to Reach 2 Degree Target

July 9, 2012
This study analyses different pathways of the developement of global greenhouse gas emissions that are consistent with the 2°C target of the Cancun Agreements (2010). The aim of the present study is to illustrate on a conceptual level how three different quantitative burden sharing algorithms lead to different emission reduction pathways for the countries. Our preliminary results indicate that with the current ambitions of the party's 2020 pledges it will be much more difficult (and costly) to reach the 2° C target than if substantial mitigation action is already taken up by all countries and sectors before 2020. We further find that even if Annex I (developed) countries would take swift action to rapidly reduce GHG emissions in the next decades, the 2°C target cannot be reached if non-Annex I (developing) countries do not participate soon in mitigation action.
