Environmental Indicators in Transportation
Jan. 1, 2000
Environmental indicators express environmental impacts per unit of transport, as a basis for comparison of the ecological efficiency of various transport means. For a coherent and complete comparison, it is necessary to also include up- and downstream processes, such as electricity production, construction of rolling stock, and infrastructure. The most decisive influencing factors are the technical performance and the loading factors per transport mean. The report provides quantitative figures for the current situation in Switzerland and looks toward future development. A number of case studies (e.g., tourism traffic and alpine transit) present in-depth analyses. The figures show that road transport has recently improved (and will continue to improve) its ecological performance in comparison to rail transport especially with regard to air pollution and security.
