Insurance as an adaptation option

Aug. 10, 2010
Adaptation to climate change requires an integrated risk management approach, including risk assessment, prevention and insurance. Insurance solutions can potentially provide a significant contribution in expanding and strengthening adaptation response to climate change.Past experiences and the sharing of insights can provide knowledge towards an adaptation implementation framework defining also the role of insurance in the emerging climate financing architecture. Further pilot programmes, research, and systematic learning is required to develop, test and demonstrate practical implementation approaches of insurance options. A background paper providing further information on past experiences and insurance based modules on adaptation as well as on the role of the public and the private sector was prepared by INFRAS, the International Research Institute for Climate and Society at Columbia University (IRI) and Swiss Re.
