Nitrogen fluxes in Switzerland - national integrated nitrogen budget for the year 2005

Jan. 1, 2011
Between 1994 and 2005, the input of hazardous nitrogen into the environment has been reduced. This is shown in a study carried out by INFRAS and partners, commissionned by the Federal Office for the Environment. The nitrogen fluxes are quantified for 2005 and are compared with the corresponding numbers in 1994. Major nitrogen reductions were achieved by transport, by industrial, commercial and residential combustions and, to a lesser degree, by agriculture. These agricultural processes still play a decisive role in the exceeding pollution with reactive nitrogen species of the atmosphere, of sensitive ecosystems and of groundwaters. The results of the study are the basics for continuing the national strategy to reduce nitrogen emissions into the environment.
