Potentials for the use of biomass for energy production

Nov. 15, 2004

The purpose of the study is to assess the ecological and economical potential of biomass in Switzerland with a view to its use for energy production. While earlier studies were limited to assessing the ecological potential of certain biomass types, the objective of this study was a comprehensive analysis of the full production chain from the sources of useful biomass through selected suitable conversion technologies to the energy products heat, electricity and biofuels. For the analysis and comparison with fossile reference systems, model applications for the production and use of heat, electricity and fuels were defined. Core elements of the study are the production of biofuels from wood, organic waste and cow dung as well as the use of GIS systems for aquisition and visualisation of data on regional biomass potentials and logistic systems.
