During recent years, the Swiss federal government have made efforts to strengthen sustainable development in various politics. So does the document Guidlines of Spatial Planning in Switzerland - as a Swiss federal planning basis - explicitely orientate towards the concept. However, Sustainable Development hasn't been operationalized and converted completely into the main instrument of regional planning, the cantonal planning guidelines up to now. On behalf of the Swiss Federal Office of Spatial Development a working group out of INFRAS, ORL-Institute and C.E.A.T. has developed a report to support the Swiss Cantons to strengthen and implement the concept of sustainable development in spatial planning. The report gives general and methodical support for elaborating and implementing of sustainable planning targets and guidelines and for sustainable planning processes including participation of stakeholders and coordination between administration units. Especially, there is need for action in respect of a coherent system of general and planning objectives of sustainability, of current monitoring and controlling and of a transparent and participatory assessment of different interests.
