The ECOFRIG Project: An Indo-Swiss-German Technology Cooperation for Ecological Domestic an Commercial Refrigeration
Aug. 28, 2003
The ECOFRIG project supports India by transferring technology and know-how on phasing out ozone-depleting CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) in the domestic and commercial refrigeration sector. The «Montreal Protocol for the Protection of the Ozone Layer» schedules the complete CFC phase-out in developing countries for 2010 and contributes to the incremental cost of conversion, but not to technology transfer. The ECOFRIG project transfers know-how and technical information to the Indian industry and to research partners and supports adaptive research and pilot production as needed to make ozone- and climate-friendly hydrocarbon refrigeration technology a viable option under Indian conditions. Hydrocarbons are flammable. The synthetic fluids and HFC and HCFC as supported by the former CFC producers are powerful greenhouse gases and partly ozone depleting. A government agreement between India (Ministry of Environment and Forest) and Switzerland (SDC contribution of 3.7 million CHF) forms the basis of the collaboration. Germany (GTZ contribution of DEM 3.4 million) and the Indian industry (CHF 2.5 million) co-finance the ECOFRIG project. INFRAS acts as project co-ordinator on behalf of the donors.
