The Swiss health system and its major economic significance

Jan. 1, 2003
The economic significance of the health system in relation to the Swiss economy as a whole was for the first time calculated by the Research Institute INFRAS in a comprehensive study commissioned by the Association of Pharmaceutical Companies in Switzerland (vips). The contribution of the health sector to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is 59 billion CHF which equals 14%. The health sector generates about 525'000 full time jobs which amounts to approximately 17% of the total employment in Switzerland. Additional benefits of the health system such as its contribution to the improvement of the quality of life, increased life expectancy and increased labour productivity were not analysed.
