INFRAS elaborated the Swiss National Study under the umbrella of the Campaign of Friends of the Earth for Sustainable Europe. The study shows that Switzerland's way of life exceeds sustainable levels in almost all areas of the environment and resources. Following the common understanding of ecological, economical, and social sustainable development, as stated by the Brundlandt Commission for example, INFRAS tried to operationalise the concept of sustainable development and to fix targets for a sustainable Switzerland. In accordance with the European Campaign, the sustainability level was defined, as far as was suitable, by the Environmental Space method which apportions the same amount of resources and environmental goods to all human beings in the world.
