Waste Management in China

Nov. 1, 2004
The management of municipal solid and of hazardous waste (MSWM and HWM) is a major environ-mental problem in China. The UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organisation) project, co-financed by SECO (Swiss State Secretariate for Economic Affairs), was designed to strengthen the strategic, management, technical and administrative capabilities of the concerned authorities within China to better manage MSW and HW through both, assistance to the ministries in charge at the national/central level and direct support to six selected provinces, six cities and several indus-tries. INFRAS' contribution focussed on providing assistance in the fields of implementation of the national waste management strategies at national level and on capacity building at national, pro-vincial and municipal level. Key activities were facilitating the process to identify and formulate strategic projects in waste management and the training of trainers, from the development of the overall training concept and approach, the elaboration of comprehensive training manuals up to the organisation and facilitation of the training of trainers at all levels.
