Nicolas Schmid works at the interface of research and policy consulting in the fields of climate and energy. His projects range from applied research on the future design of the energy system, decarbonisation of the building sector and climate protection measures in industry to the implementation and monitoring of policy instruments at national and local level.

He has extensive experience in managing national and international research and consulting projects. His clients are primarily public actors such as cities, cantons, federal offices and institutions in Switzerland and abroad. Methodologically, he combines qualitative and quantitative approaches and works closely with a broad network of partners from academia and the private sector. His work is published in leading peer-reviewed journals.

Nicolas Schmid studied political science in Stuttgart, Bordeaux and Toronto. He earned his doctorate in the Energy and Technology Policy Group at ETH Zurich and was a visiting researcher at UC Berkeley. His dissertation on the interaction between politics and innovation in the energy sector was awarded the ETH Medal. Before joining INFRAS, Nicolas worked as a senior researcher and lecturer at ETH Zurich. Today, he is also an affiliated researcher at the Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) in Milan.
