The German ministry of Economy and Employment assigned the DIW (Deutsches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung, German Institute for Economic Research) to compare the economic importance of the tourism sector. In selected countries of Europe (Denmark, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden) the DIW compared the individual efforts for a more sustainable tourism among each of these countries. For each country, the importance of tourism is illustrated according to its gross domestic product, in total and split by different tourism categories (business, bagpacker, health resort, etc.). The study is also an indication as to which national economies tourism is of importance as a source of demand for the different industries. In addition to these quantitative analyses, the study not only presents efforts and models for developing sustainable tourism in the different countries, but compared and acknowledged them.
