Environmental Impacts of the Swiss Energy Strategy 2050

July 18, 2013
The Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) engaged the task force INFRAS/Ecosens to analyse the new Energy Strategy 2050 of the Swiss Government from an environmental perspective. The analysis and evaluation of the environmental impacts include both the proposed measures and the main technologies for power generation. The two reports shall serve as a basis for the further development of measures and as a help in priorisation regarding the promotion of renewable energies. A clear majority of the groups of measures is assessed as being non-critical. The measures for the promotion of energy efficiency represent a considerable contribution to the development of a society with a low energy consumption. Furthermore, they alleviate the pressure on the environment. The additional installation of plants for the use of renewable energies (e.g. hydro and wind power plants, photovoltaic and biomass systems) on the one hand, supports the goals of air pollution control and climate policy, on the other hand, however, there is a tendency of a negative impact concerning the criteria of natural zones and habitats as well as biodiversity.
