Update external costs of transport in Germany 2005

Commissioned by the German 'Allianz pro Schiene', INFRAS together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovations Research ISI and the IER Institute of the University of Stuttgart conducted a study on external costs of transport in Germany 2005. External costs of transport amount to over 80 Billion Euro in 2005. The share of road transport of total costs is approx. 96%, the share of rail transport approx. 3.1%, domestic air transport as well as inland navigation 0.6% and 0.5% resp. The most important cost category is accident costs, followed by climate change costs, noise costs and air pollution costs. The study presents also a comparison of transport modes based on average external costs.
