Many Swiss companies want to electrify their freight fleets. The challenges include choosing the right fleet composition and charging strategy, and there are several barriers to electrification. With the support of the Swiss government, a consortium including INFRAS has developed a baseline study on the decarbonization of freight transport and an Excel tool to provide concrete decision support for companies.

The Handbook of Emission Factors for Road Traffic (HBEFA) was developed by INFRAS. It is a standard for calculating vehicle emissions in different traffic situations. The HBEFA has now undergone another comprehensive update.

How do companies decide which mode of transportation to use to ship goods in Switzerland? In a research project INFRAS and Rapp investigated this question. The main results of the study are a qualitative decision and impact model for modal choice in domestic transportation.

With an increasing number of electric vehicles on the road, mineral oil tax is generating less income. The Federal Council wants to offset this by introducing a compensation levy on electric vehicles. It has published a consultation draft for the introduction of such a levy. INFRAS supported FEDRO together with Ecoplan in drafting the proposal.

While fossil-free vehicles are increasingly being used on the roads, diesel engines continue to dominate shipping on Swiss waters. This should change in order to reach the political goal of net-zero by 2050. On behalf of the Swiss Federal Office of Transport and several cantons, INFRAS is investigating the prospects for the decarbonization of shipping in Switzerland.

For 90% of the internal combustion cars currently on Swiss roads, it is worth replacing them with an electric car. On behalf of the Swiss Federal Government, INFRAS calculated the greenhouse gas emissions along the life cycle of passenger cars and compared the CO2 savings potential for different scenarios.

A sustainable network of public charging stations is needed: The municipality of Pratteln wants to promote electric mobility at the local level. A needs analysisshows what the charging network should look like, where the optimal charging locations are - and how the municipality can go about implementing it.

The Eurostat report monitors the European Union's progress towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It provides an annual overview of the EU, individual member states and other countries such as Switzerland. INFRAS also contributed to the 2025 report.

What are the external and infrastructure costs of the transport sector? To what extent have EU member states and other selected countries internalised these costs? The European Commission has mandated an international research consortium, including INFRAS, to investigate these questions.
