Electric mobility: A demand-driven charging network for the municipality of Pratteln

July 7, 2025

A sustainable network of public charging stations is needed: The municipality of Pratteln wants to promote electric mobility at the local level. A needs analysisshows what the charging network should look like, where the optimal charging locations are - and how the municipality can go about implementing it.

The municipality of Pratteln (BL) wants to promote electric mobility. The goal is to develop a future-oriented, demand-oriented public charging infrastructure. The framework conditions for future tenders should be optimally prepared.

In collaboration with Swisscharge, INFRAS conducted a needs analysis for the public charging infrastructure in Pratteln.

Types of charging stations and specific locations shown

The analysis shows that the demand for charging in Pratteln will increase significantly in the medium term. Among other things, the study examines how many and what types of charging stations are needed to create a charging network that meets demand. It identifies the best locations within the community and outlines how Pratteln can promote e-mobility for residents who do not have access to private charging facilities.

Proven methodology tailored to your needs

The study follows theINFRAS methodology for regionalized electric mobility scenarios for Switzerland. The demand analysis is based on the Handbook of Emission Factors for Road Traffic (HBEFA). The HBEFA was developed by INFRAS and is a widely recognized standard data source for emission factors. The new version 5.1 of the HBEFA forms the basis for the new national electric mobility scenarios of INFRAS, which will be published in fall 2025 and will serve as a basis for the development of the new energy perspectives of the German Federal Government, for which INFRAS is responsible for the transport sector.

The site analysis uses criteria such as charging demand, technical feasibility, attractiveness and mobility behavior to evaluate potential sites within the city. This resulted in a prioritized shortlist of suitable charging locations for Pratteln.

The recommendations of the needs assessment address issues related to the planning and installation of the charging infrastructure. The report also highlights areas that the community may want to explore further, such as funding options or who will be responsible for operating the system in the future.
