Freight Transport in Switzerland: How Companies Choose Their Mode of Transport

Oct. 22, 2025

How do companies decide which mode of transportation to use to ship goods in Switzerland? In a research project INFRAS and Rapp investigated this question. The main results of the study are a qualitative decision and impact model for modal choice in domestic transportation.

The choice of freight mode is a complex process. In some cases, politicians and administrators lack knowledge about the underlying decision-making processes, influencing factors and drivers.

A research report commissioned by the Swiss Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) and carried out by INFRAS and Rapp makes an important contribution to a better understanding of these interrelationships. It provides a basis for future transport policy and regulatory decisions, as well as for business decisions.

Potential for shifting long-distance traffic to rail

According to data analysis of the freight transport market in Switzerland, the majority of freight is transported by road. Due to its high flexibility and availability, road transport seems to be the only option, especially for short distances. For longer distances, however, there is still potential for a shift to rail or intermodal transport.

Criteria and influencing factors for transport mode choice in Swiss companies

The case studies of various Swiss companies conducted as part of the research report show that strategic decisions - such as the choice of location or investments in infrastructure - have a long-term impact on the choice of transportation mode. In addition, a survey of 62 Swiss companies on the decision-making process shows that punctuality, reliability, price, infrastructure and flexibility are the most important criteria for choosing a transport mode.

Modal Choice Impact Model for Domestic Freight Transportation in Switzerland

Based on the results of the data analysis, the case studies, the survey and the stakeholder workshop, an impact model was developed that differentiates between the advantages of the different modes of transport. It provides an overview of the interrelationships between the decision criteria and the factors influencing the choice of transport mode for domestic freight transport in Switzerland. The impact model thus makes an important contribution to transportation modeling.
