Setting up fibre-to-the-home networks (FTTH)

June 16, 2008
Fibre-to-the-home-networks, nowadays also known as next generation networks, will probably in the long term supersede current copper cables (e.g. to subscriber's extensions). In Switzerland, some local utilities decided to setup fibre-to-the-home-networks so that the population will be provided for in the long term with fast next generation access networks. These are designed as open transport platforms granting other telecom providers non-discriminating access. During the preliminary stages, several Swiss Cities were supported by INFRAS concerning strategic, economic and competitive issues. In conjunction with technology partners, INFRAS created setup designs and business plans and evaluated economic efficiency and convenience of such undertakings. Reports and drafts of the directives were created on the basis of these analyses and evaluations for the political decision-makers (municipal councils/populace).
